Automobilist State of the (Fine) Art, Duel in the Desert

The 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix will forever be etched in the memories of Formula 1® fans as a defining moment for the Mercedes team. With Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg behind the wheel, the race was a thrilling display of high-speed competition and raw talent. In the end, it was Hamilton who emerged victorious, crossing the finish line just ahead of Rosberg. This victory was crucial in cutting Rosberg's overall lead in the Drivers’ Championship to just 11 points, ultimately securing Lewis his second title.

For 57 heart-stopping laps at the Bahrain International Circuit, the two teammates put on a masterclass in racing, going wheel-to-wheel for the lead. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as they witnessed a battle between two of the most formidable drivers in the sport. To recreate such a moment and its breathtaking atmosphere, the artwork had to be done perfectly to the very last detail. Researching both cars and the circuit from various photo and video graphics angles, the final artwork depicts the immense battle of the two teammates in the heat of the moment - going head to head at extreme speeds.

Capturing the historical battle between the two teammates to its full extent, the scene was completely remade using computer graphics. From the track, to the vehicles, as well as the drivers behind the wheel, the entirety of the artwork was modelled in 3D. Due to the low angle depicting both cars, the models had to be done with extreme precision. To recreate the intricate design of W5's front wing, which combines Mercedes' colours and carbon elements, was no easy task. Every little bolt, scratch and deformation had to be true to the original vehicle to reflect the irreplaceable atmosphere of the fateful night - and it does just that.

As Nico Rosberg himself said after the race, even he appreciated the duel. “I strongly dislike finishing second to Lewis, but on the other hand, it was the most exciting race I have ever had in my whole career,” Rosberg said. “Today was a day for the sport.” With that being said, you can enjoy the moment yourself and have it immortalised in the form of our Fine Art Print.
