Will my baby be cold? Or too hot? How should I dress my baby in a carrier during cold weather?
1. It is important to remember that using a baby carrier or a wrap adds an extra layer of "clothing". As such, you and your baby should wear one layer less. Both your body and your baby's body radiate heat, so if you feel cold, your baby will feel cold, too. Similarly, if you are overheated, your baby will be too. The fewer layers between you and your baby, the better you can keep each other warm. Additionally, having your baby wear thick and chubby winter clothes can make it more difficult to position them correctly in the carrier, which is essential for their comfort and development.
2. It's best to avoid dressing your baby in onesies or jumpsuits. Instead, choose loose-fitting clothes that consist of a separate top and bottom. This is because babies need to sit with their legs apart, so they must be dressed in clothing that allows unrestricted movement. Jumpsuits and onesies can pull and squeeze their toes, making it uncomfortable to sit with their legs wide apart. Therefore, loose-fitting clothes are a better choice for your baby's comfort and mobility.
3. When carrying your baby in a carrier or wrap, it's important to protect their exposed body parts from the cold. You can use feet covers, or thick woollen socks/shoes. A beanie or hat is a must to keep their head warm. You can use an attached hoodie for extra protection if the weather is unpleasant. Cover their neck to prevent them from feeling cold and uncomfortable while sleeping.
When babywearing a toddler who can walk, keep a jumpsuit in a bag so you can dress them when they want to walk.
